Riley Park – Centenary Celebrations and Heritage Trail

| | ,

On Sat 17th July 2014, an event was held in Riley Park to mark the centenary year of the founding of the charitable Trust which to this day maintains the park entirely through donations and receive no public funding.

The Trust was founded by Edward Riley and his wife Emma in July 1914, donating the land as an area for children to play, and for the wider community to use.  Nowadays it contains a children’s playground, and the wider park is well used by football teams, dog walkers and local residents.

A major feature of the day was the unveiling by the Mayor, Suzanne Brown,  of plaques forming a heritage trail – each one depicting historic facts about the park, and its nearby environment. There are 8 in all, each one with photos and detailed comments – and  really are worth a look at.

The other major part of the celebrations was a football match between England Fans FC, and a similar team representing Brazil.

The sun stayed out, and a good time was had by all – including us, and you can see some images of the day below (photos a combination of those taken by us, and some by Mary Shannon)
