RAF High Wycombe personnel will parade along Marlow’s High Street on 18 September and, in accordance with tradition, will have their swords drawn, bayonets fixed and colours flying.  They will be joined by local RAF Air cadets, including the unit from Marlow which incidentally celebrates 75 years of existence on the 10th September!

The RAF base in Naphill was awarded the freedom of the district by Wycombe District Council in 2011. The parade also marks the 76th anniversary of the Battle of Britain.

RAF station commander, Group Captain Phil Lester said: “The Freedom Parade celebrates the close relationship that exists between the community of the Wycombe district and RAF High Wycombe.

“The Battle of Britain was a pivotal point in history and the Second World War in particular. We are proud to remember those brave men and women who gave the ultimate sacrifice, and look forward to sharing this commemoration with the residents of the district.”

The parade will leave Court Garden car park at about 1.35pm, marching along the High Street to muster at the War Memorial in the Causeway for a short service to commemorate the Battle of Britain.

A service will be held in All Saint’s Church following the parade.

West Street from the Oxford Road junction, the High Street, Spittal Street and Marlow Bridge will all be closed between 12.30pm and 2.30pm for the parade.

The Mayor of Marlow Cllr Bob Johnson said: “It is a huge honour that RAF High Wycombe has chosen Marlow to host their Freedom Parade.

“We look forward to welcoming RAF High Wycombe’s servicemen and women to our town. Please do join us on the High Street to show them a Marlow welcome.”
