Why is Marlow where it is? Because it’s a convenient location for both the M40 and the M4? Probably not. But this Marlow Archaeological Society talk aims to shed some light on what might be the actual reasons…

A Talk by Colin Berks MIFA MAAIS – Thursday 17 May 2012.

The origins of Marlow and why it is where it is are something of a mystery. The talk will explore what we know, what we don’t know and ideas for research to create a better understanding.

We know that in the Neolithic, say 2500BC, and probably into the early Iron Age, say 300BC, the location of occupation was to the west of the current town around Harleyford, and then the higher areas. There is evidence for Neolithic housing, agriculture, industry and burial. It is also apparent that the main route at this time through the area was from Harleyford, via Bisham, towards Cookham.

By 1200AD things have changed dramatically. Doomsday, in 1086 records manors, a mill and a fishery. In 1290 there are records indicating economic expansion, the beginnings of a town with the main route from Widmer, via Marlow, to Bisham, and a substantial bridge off Park Street, plus the possibility of routes to Bourne End, Henley and Wycombe.

So what happened between say 300BC and about 1000AD to cause the centre of occupation to move from a mile to the west, to its current location? We just don’t know for certain but the talk will explore some possible reasons.

Thursday 17th May 2012, Garden Room, Liston Hall, Marlow, at 8pm

Monday 14th May at Sir William Borlase’s Grammar School, West Street, Marlow, SL7 2BR.

On the Sunday 10th June, the Marlow Town Regatta & Festival’s enclosure will once again be taken over by the Marlow Dragon Boat Festival. Featuring over 20 teams of friends, family, team mates and colleagues, the event is carried out in a great atmosphere and is a fantastic day out for participants and supporters young and old, where many also raise money for a local charity, school or group.

There are still a few places left, so don’t miss the boat and enter now!

Below is some of the feedback from last year’s participants highlighting what a good time was had

“Very well organised, very enthusiastic instructors and staff and would definitely recommend this event to anyone. Great fun and a great day out, many thanks .”

“Thanks for a great day shame about the weather but we loved it and were superbly delighted to win!!!! not expected at all so all went home buzzing last night!!! We will be back next year and request Gordon, the helmsman/trainer again please pass on thanks to him as well. Thanks again for a fun event”. Winners of the Ladies Race

“Thanks for a great day yesterday in Marlow even better as we won this year!” Winners of the Open Race

“Thanks for everything it was great fun despite the weather and I am sure the team will be back next year .”

The team can be an Open Team (mix of male and female), all Ladies Team or a Junior Team (12-18 year olds). The price to enter for a team of up to 15 people is from £350 (6-10 paddlers & a drummer are required for each race). Teams are guaranteed a minimum of 3 races and prizes are available for the first, second & third placed teams as well as the best dressed & named teams on the day. Each entry package includes a training session before the day to allow teams to get in some practice whether they have been in a dragon boat before or are first timers.
