Baroosh – the first review!

| |

The new bar, Baroosh,  opens in Marlow on Monday 17th December – located where Lloyds Bank used to be.

We popped in to check it out during their preview weekend – so here is what you can expect:

Baroosh is part of a small chain focused on the South of England-  Marlow is the 7th one. One key aspect that separates from most other pubs and bars in town is a strict over 21s policy at all times – and when we say all times that includes breakfast and lunch. Obviously this takes it out of the “family lunch” market, but the aimed for ambiance is adult, stylish and contemporary.

Cocktails start from £5.95, shooters at £3.50, plus a good range of draft and bottled ales, lagers and ciders. (The real ale is from parent company McMullens brewery). Wine costs from about £13 a bottle.. right up to some quite pricey champagne!

We tried the food – and were pleased with the quality, some photos and comments are below.  We have to admit having seen the decor we were expecting some quite hefty prices. It turned out not to be the case at all – menus are on the Baroosh website.

Baroosh should prove popular – during the day it would be ideal for work and shopping lunches, and in the evening it should pull in a crowd. In the summer, it should be a bit special – the decked garden area is the largest outdoor pub space in the town centre, complete with an outdoor bar and pizza oven!

  1. Had Saturday lunch there – Very good. Burger isn’t going to win any awards and the helping of fries is downright stingy, poorly masked by the apparent novelty of sticking them all in a mug, but it was a good burger all the same and came up cooked medium which I was well happy about. Cappuccino was really good actually, easily beating Costa around the corner. Quirky interior and decent atmosphere means we will consider going back. Server was helpful, personable and on the ball so no gripes there. Friends had mussels, which were in a Thai broth and they were tasty too – Prefer the white wine/garlic broth myself, but that’s just personal taste.

One own goal – They don’t take bookings for tables of 2; you have to just turn up and gamble on there being availability. Lame policy, since lots of people don’t want the hassle of wondering whether they will have to hang around for ages, get turned away, or actually get a table. Being told that “it’s a pretty big restaurant” by the staff isn’t reassurance enough. You only need to try and get into Zizzi in Marlow on certain week nights to see that being big doesn’t mean you will get a table.

Yet another one of those idiotic policies that are unnecessarily complicated. Was going to go there this evening, but after finding out we couldn’t reserve a table we decided to go Zizzi instead – Booked over the phone with no problem.

Baroosh is a good addition to Marlow, and for a night out it’s probably going to be good too – The bar is big and they do cocktails etc. so plenty of variation. I’d definitely go there over The Chequers any day.

  2. I am looking for food which is not expensive in pleasant surroundings I think the two eggs and a few chips and a cooked tomato all for £9 is FAR too expensive. It was off putting
