2011 Major Social Events preview

| | ,

There are certain social events worth blocking into your diaries this early in the year- we are talking about the major local festivals and regattas – including some taking place in our nearby neighbour towns.  (To keep up to date with these and other local events, register for our monthly newsletter)

So without further ado, in date order – here are the events and dates to start looking forward to:

Let’s Rock The Moor (Cookham, 21st May)
An open air, charity pop concert raising funds for both national and local charities. Let’s Rock The Moor! is part of the Cookham Festival 2011, which we have already written a detailed article on.

Some big names from the 80s headlining this year: Rick Astley, T’Pau, The Real Thing, Curiosity Killed the Cat… and many more bands throughout the day.
In addition there is plenty laid on for children including the Let’s Rock The Moor Danz Skool, an Indoor Cinema showing animated classics, and crowd entertainers.

The Marlow Town Regatta and Festival (11th and 12th June)

Dragon boat fun at Marlow Town Regatta

Marlow town’s premier sporting and social occasion, which is split across two days:

Marlow Town Regatta (Saturday 11th June) – a traditional rowing regatta, with an enclosure on the banks of the Thames in Higginson Park. Badges will be available online shortly.  As normal, it will also be possible to reserve parking and picnic spaces on the cricket ground.
Dragon Boating & Party in the Park (Sunday 12th June)  – a family and festival day with dragon boating during the day, followed in the evening by The Party in the Park – featuring The Overtures, a 60’s tribute band. The night is rounded off with fireworks.

The Floating Stage at Henley Festival 2010

Henley Festival (6th to 10th July 2011)
For 5 nights in the week following Henley  Regatta,  Henley Festival always brings a huge line up – classical music, jazz, opera, comedy, dance, street theatre, rock and firework spectaculars, making it one of the largest arts festivals in the country.

In addition to the music, there are art galleries, street theatre and a choice of bars and catering facilities. This is one of my personal favourites of the year in terms of social events!
The 2011 programme will be announced shortly, and we will report as and when it is. www.henley-festival.co.uk

Rewind 2011 (19th-21st Aug 2011)

Crowds at Rewind 2010

The third annual Rewind Festival, which is apparently the world’s biggest 80s music festival,  takes place at Temple Island Meadows, Henley-on-Thames, over the weekend of August 19th-21st 2011. The capacity this year has been expanded to 40,000, and access is via day tickets or weekend tickets including a camping option – this is a full scale music festival!
The line-up includes Holly Johnson, The Human League, Haircut 100, Billy Ocean, Howard Jones,Nik Kershaw and too many more to list here. To be precise, the line-up of 24 acts have amassed 180 Top 20 hits, 16 chart toppers and 50 years in the charts between them!
