Here’s another roundup of action from Marlow Hockey Club, who as usual fielded an amazing number of teams!
Men’s Results
The men’s 1st team met Amersham & Chalfont who were sterner opposition than they have met in the league so far,
It turned out to be hard-fought and scrappy and Marlow missed their leading scorer Callum White. However skipper Sam North stepped up just before halftime with a goal from a penalty corner. Six minutes into the second half Lewis Goodman scored from a defensive error which left him one on one with the goalkeeper. Amersham scored when taking advantage of a Marlow error but Marlow held on to win 2-1. With other results going their way Marlow are now clear at the top of the league with maximum points.
The 2nd team, with a youthful and much-changed side, did well to draw 2-2 with Wycombe 1sts but had every right to feel disappointed when Wycombe equalised with a minute to go. Marlow came through a lot of pressure early in the game and scored with a well-taken goal by James Ashburner, rather against the run of play. With the score 1 each in the second half, Marlow scored again through George Atkins but were saved many times by the efforts of goalkeeper Ivor Crampsie before the belated equaliser.
Ladies results
Marlow Ladies 1st team were away at Winchester who they met for the first time. They started strongly with a goal from Kerri Smith in the first two minutes of the game. Further attacking play led to another gaol by Vic Allen deflecting a wonderful strike from Kiera Foster. Marlow’s third goal came in the twelfth minute from Jane Smith. Winchester were quick on the break but the Marlow defence held strong with some great communication from the back and some superb play from player of the match Grace Kisbee. There were to be no more goals in the match although there were many more chances. Credit should go to the Winchester keeper who made numerous fantastic saves.
The 2nd team played South Berks1 and drew 2-2 in a close game. Goals for Marlow were scored by Emily Gillespie and Kesia Richardson.
