Talk: Lost in the Woods – Medieval Farms in the Chilterns

‘Lost in the Woods – Medieval Farms in the Chilterns’ A talk by Andy Ford, Organised by Archaeology in Marlow (AIM)

Hidden away in many of the woods of the Chiltern hills are the remains of isolated medieval farms. By reviewing historical evidence and recent archaeological investigations, Andy will try to answer some questions about these mysterious buildings - why were they constructed? Why are they in such isolated places? When were they built and by whom? And why did they fall into disuse and disappear?

Charity Boden Shopping Party 4:00 PM - 9:00 PM

Claytons PTA is holding a Boden Shopping Party to raise money for school funds.  Our first ever such event (held in March) raised over £500 so we hope to be equally successful in the run-up to Christmas.

It's on Thursday 9th October from 4-9pm - you can drop in whenever you like between those times.
The party is open to the whole community and we'd love as many people as possible to come along.

A Boden shopping party gives you the opportunity to see, touch, try and buy clothes first hand from all of Boden's adult and children's clothing ranges.

If you bring a new customer who's never ordered from Boden before, you get £25 credit on your personal Boden account if they buy something. The PTA also benefits from a higher rate of commission on orders from new customers, so do bring your friends!

Customers will receive at least a 20% discount on all purchases and the first 40 people to place an order will also receive an exclusive free gift: a rather desirable Boden make-up bag!

Refreshments will be available, and we will have a raffle with the first prize of a £50 Boden voucher.

Marlow Town Council - Flood Review Meeting 7:15 PM

Marlow Town Council (MTC) is holding a Flood Review Meeting for all residents affected by last year’s flooding on Thursday, October 9th at 7.15pm, in the Higginson Room at Court Garden.

The purpose of the meeting is to review with residents the role that the Council played in the floods at the beginning of this year.  MTC will report on residents’ feedback to the agencies responsible for flood management, including Thames Water, the Environment Agency, Bucks CC and Wycombe DC, in a follow-up meeting two weeks later.

“While Marlow Town Council does not hold an official role in the management of flooding in our area, we are committed to ensuring the best possible service to our residents should there be a recurrence of last year’s events, and we want to ensure that all views are taken into account in any future planning,” said Cllr Suzanne Brown, Marlow Town Mayor.

“The meeting has been scheduled at this time of year because we are hoping that most residents who were affected by the floods will be back in their homes.”

For those unable to attend the meeting there is a feedback form on the website

Talk: The Archaeology of the Jubilee River 8:00 PM

The Archaeology of the Jubilee River -  A talk by Stuart Foreman

Why did people gather at the site of a long abandoned Roman farmstead not far from the river Thames sometime around the year AD 760; what was their purpose and where did they come from? With no apparent evidence of any major Saxon or early medieval settlement focus, how did this area relate to the important sites at Taplow and Windsor?

The excavations by Oxford Archaeology on the sites of the Environment Agency's Maidenhead, Windsor and Eton Flood Alleviation Scheme and the Eton College Rowing Course have produced an exceptional site of Anglo-Saxon date.

Stuart Foreman was Project Manager for the extensive excavations at Taplow

Talk: Henley River & Rowing Museum’s Local Collection

‘Henley River & Rowing Museum’s Local Collection’ - A talk by the Museum’s Curator, Eloise Chapman - Organised by Archaeology in Marlow (AIM)

The River & Rowing Museum (RRM) collection covers three main themes, the town of Henley on Thames, the history of the River Thames and the sport of Rowing. Unusually the Museum concept and building design came before a collection had been formed. This led to an unique approach to archaeological collecting based on a policy of co-operation with the local museum community.

The collection was established on a 250,000 year old Palaeolithic hand axe and has grown over the last 15 years to 20,000 items including several extraordinary archaeological finds, such as Anglo-Saxon and Medieval log boats and an Iron Age hoard of early British coins. Displays also include loans from the archaeology collections of the Ashmolean, Museum of London, Museum of Reading and Oxfordshire Museums Resource Centre.

These objects tell the stories of the development of human life on the Thames and in Henley, as well as the wider development of British society. This talk will take a closer look at these objects and discuss the Museum’s approach to collecting, loans and display.
