We recently shared details of the winners at the Marlow FM Hidden Gems Awards (click here for an updated version with more info on each winner). In addition, during the ceremony, a Special Recognition Award was given to Tim Ashburner – and here’s the details from Marlow FM as to why 🙂
During the Hidden Gems Awards Party, Tim’s friend and partner in crime Simon Bunt described everything Tim has done for the town that he dearly loves.
Tim has supported Sandygate school, Holy Trinity and Great Marlow while his children were there and long after.
He has provided sound, lighting and power for:
- Summer Fetes
- Christmas Nativities
- School Productions
- Praise in the Park
- Spring Flings
- Quiz Nights
and more.
For more than 20 years Tim has also been involved with the wider community of Marlow not only doing tech stuff but also playing the drums and piano. These events include:
- The May Fair
- Hope in the Park
- Marlow Town regatta & Festival
- Lighthouse
- Marlow Carnival
- Christmas light switch on
- Late Night Shopping
- Santa’s Fun Run
- Hustings
- Marlow Methodist Church
And many more …
When we say ‘involved’, he didn’t just rock up to help out for a couple of hours, he has been instrumental in the planning, rigging, running and derigging of many of these events. There have been many a weekend where he and Simon Bunt have met in the park at 5am on a cold dark winters morning to start rigging
And it is this man’s vision that has brought Marlow FM to life, what started out as a couple of RSL’s in 2017 has turned into an integral part of the community giving locals a platform to present on the radio and discuss local topics and events live on air.
There have been many different forms of studios along the way, lots of water, literally 100’s of outside broadcasts, cables laid in the Thames, cables strung between lamp posts, trees, across roads and some seriously questionable health and safety.
It is Tim’s time, dedication and technical wizardry that has brought all this together and made Marlow FM one of the most technologically advanced community radio stations in the country, evidenced by the new studios at Great Marlow School being a prime example where he has spent almost 400 hours bringing the new home of Marlow FM to life.
We would all also like to thank Tina, his wife who puts up with an awful lot of kit taking residence in her hall, coming to the rescue when we need a new something at an OB, always supporting fundraising events and a loyal and supportive listener!
Tim dedicated his award to her as well and everyone at Marlow Fm totally agrees!
