“Local Voices” guest post provided by Steve Parker of Marlow Town Band

As part of its 120th Anniversary Marlow Town Band is having a busy year, in March it played to a packed audience at the Kenton Theatre in Henley, this was followed up by trip to Budapest, where as guests of the Budavar (local district in Budapest) council it did seven events in three days to help mark the liberation of Budapest in 1848.

The trip came about as part of our sharing of the famous bridges both in Marlow and Budapest, designed by the English Engineer William Tierney Clerk and completed just a few years apart,

In honour of our towns shared piece of history a special waistcoat was made showing the flags of both countries – see photo.

As well as concerts in the openair it also held a joint rehearsal and workshop with students at a local Budapest music school.

Musical Director Steve Parker says the highlight was being able to provide a concert inside the St Matthias church, where the band was able not only to perform itself but also played a joint piece with the Church organ (Organist Barnabas Hegyi) the occasion was added to by the local Mayor who gave a warm welcome and UK Ambassador to Hungary was also in attendance.

The band hopes it has been able to lay the foundation for future cultural visits between Marlow and Budapest.
