Victoria Barber, a Marlow based triathlon coach has just completed a week of water safety sessions for local children – all provided free of charge!! A number of 40 minute sessions were held at Westhorpe Lake, near Little Marlow – involving a staggering 160 children, and there will be more to come too.
19-26 June has been “Drowning Prevention Week” , particularly poignant given a recent tragic incident near Bourne End. Victoria told MyMarlow “Taking into account the heightened local awareness for river safety I wanted to do what i could to equip local children with the knowledge to make the right decisions around open water, and to teach basic life saving skills, just in case they are ever needed.”
There was a huge demand as Victoria explained “I originally planned a few sessions, and promoted them via social media. They filled up so quickly I felt I had to add more, which also filled up quickly.”
Victoria also told us there are at least 250 on a waiting list plus schools too, and amazingly she has committed to get through the whole Marlow community for every child requiring education on water safety!
The sessions involve 25 mins of discussion on land, then 15 minutes in the water.
Victoria also wanted to thank Westhorpe Watersports who allowed her to use the open water swimming lake free of charge to run the sessions.
We will publicise future dates as they become available.
