Is there a dirty bottom in Marlow?!

| |

Found during my random web trawling today…

The screen shot is from the Bucks Family History Society‘s website, which has a list of all places historically within the Great Marlow Parish.

Most are still recognisable today, though a few have been lost.  Not surprisingly the highlighted place name seems to have been erm… quietly replaced?!   Some residents moan about having a Slough postcode -what on earth would they make of this place?

It’s not clear where Dirty Bottom was, but looking at census returns from the late 1800’s reveals residents were mostly farm labourers, shepherds and so on – and other places named on the same census sheets suggest it might have been just outside the town on the way up to Lane End.

In any case – bring it back I say, what an address to be proud of!!
